Mount Everest is Earth's highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The international border between Nepal and China runs across its summit point.

The name "Mount Everest" was first proposed in this 1856 speech, later published in 1857, in which the mountain was first confirmed as the world's highest

Mount Everest attracts many climbers, some of them highly experienced mountaineers. There are two main climbing routes, one approaching the summit from the southeast in Nepal (known as the "standard route") and the other from the north in Tibet. While not posing substantial technical climbing challenges on the standard route, Everest presents dangers such as altitude sickness, weather, and wind, as well as significant hazards from avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall. As of 2019, over 300 people have died on Everest, many of whose bodies remain on the mountain.

About the Permits

334 climbing permits were issued in 2014 in Nepal. These were extended until 2019 due to the closure. In 2015 there were 357 permits to climb Everest, but the mountain was closed again because of the avalanche and earthquake, and these permits were given a two-year extension to 2017 (not to 2019 as with the 2014 issue).

In 2017, a permit evader who tried to climb Everest without the $11,000 permit faced, among other penalties, a $22,000 fine, bans, and a possible four years in jail after he was caught (he had made it up past the Khumbu icefall) In the end he was given a 10-year mountaineering ban in Nepal and allowed to return home.

Total cost to visit Mount Everest

“The typical cost when climbing the Everest with a Western agency is $45,000 and above. With a local Nepali operator it can be between $25,000 and $40,000.” The cost includes the royalty fee of $11,000 for the peak. Most agencies conduct sherpa-supported climbs.

 How to reach there

The quickest way is to fly from Kathmandu to Lukla airport, high in the Himalayas. From here, it's a couple of days' walk to Namche Bazar, the Sherpa capital of the Everest area. You'll need at least a couple of days here to acclimatise to the altitude, and then about five to seven days to walk to the Base Camp.

If you travel from Kathmandu to the South Face of Mount Everest, the estimated distance is about 150 miles.
It takes much longer to the North Face in Tibet, because first you need to take over half day driving (about 160 km/100 miles) to Gyirong Port, then cross the border port, drive more than 420 km/260 miles to Mount Everest Base Camp in Shigatse, Tibet, China.
